The Paynesville Magistral Court has cited several people, institutions and businesses to appear before Stipendiary Magistrate, William G. Saygah on Friday, 16 April for illegally erecting structures in the Mesurado Wetlands in violation of the Environmental Protection and Management Law (EPML) of Liberia.
Some of the businesses, individuals and institutions cited are Zeo Wood Workshop, Samuel David, USA Auto and Travel, Konah Lewis, Bishop Alfred Grear, Tetee Gartar and a Block Factory adjacent Kailondo Gas Station along the SKD Boulevard in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
They are to appeared in the Chambers of the Stipendiary Magistrate to respond to a petition filed with the court by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

MONROVIA – The Judiciary under the watch of Chief Justice Francis S. Korkpor has come under the spotlight for lacking independence while judges stand accused of soliciting bribes to try cases or even grant bails – according to the U.S. State Department 2020 Human Rights Report.
The report which was released on Tuesday by the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken, cites arbitrary killings, detention and judicial lapses.
On the judiciary, the report states: “The Constitution provides for an independent judiciary, but judges and magistrates were subject to influence and engaged in corruption. Judges sometimes solicited bribes to try cases, grant bail to detainees, award damages in civil cases, or acquit defendants in criminal cases. Defense attorneys and prosecutors sometimes suggested defendants pay bribes to secure favorable decisions from judges, prosecutors, and jurors, or to have court staff place cases on the docket for trial.”

The Weala Magisterial Court in Margibi County has denied a petition by human rights advocacy group Green Advocates, citing reasons that points put forth by the group’s legal team about transferring the case of attack on some residents around the operational area of the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) were not genuine enough to have the case transferred.
Green Advocates of recent took some men identified to be loyal to the Salala Rubber Corporation to the Weala Magisterial Court for allegedly attacking advocates and villagers who were protesting against the company’s operation for land issue.
