The Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) operating in Margibi County has rejected claims by villagers that it is involved with human rights abuses and land grabs the local villagers have claimed in recent times.
It may be recalled that villagers in the operational areas of SRC recently told journalists who toured villages surrounding the plantation that SRC was forcefully grabbing their land and refusing to employ them. They further indicated that some men hired by the company attacked rights advocates in villages around the plantation and threatened to harm them; a case that is currently in the Magisterial Court in Weala.

Salala Rubber Corporation, established in 1959, holds a concession of over 40,000 hectares in central Liberia, but has often been accused of land grabbing and destruction of the locals’ farms, including private rubber farms and edible crops like eddoes and plantains.
Weala, Margibi County – Aggrieved residents of affected communities have accused the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) in Margibi County of masterminding a wave of violent attacks against them and Green Advocates International (GAI).
The residents claimed that the latest attacks by the group, comprising current employees and contractors of the company have led some residents including local activists to flee the area for fear of their lives, while most of them who left behind are now living with fear.

The Weala Magisterial Court in Margibi County has denied a petition by human rights advocacy group Green Advocates, citing reasons that points put forth by the groupâs legal team about transferring the case of attack on some residents around the operational area of the Salala Rubber Corporation (SRC) were not genuine enough to have the case transferred.
Green Advocates of recent took some men identified to be loyal to the Salala Rubber Corporation to the Weala Magisterial Court for allegedly attacking advocates and villagers who were protesting against the companyâs operation for land issue.
