National Assembly approves zero salary increases for judges, magistrates and public protector By Mayibongwe Maqhina Share Parties sang from the same hymn sheet when they supported the recommendations for the zero salary increase for judges, magistrates and some heads of chapter nine institutions. On Thursday, the National Assembly debated the proposals when the justice and correctional services portfolio committee tabled its report. The committee recommended a 0% salary increase for the public protector, deputy public protector, commissioners of the South African Human Rights Commission, Constitutional Court judges and other judges with effect from April 2020. They made their recommendations after President Cyril Ramaphosa received the annual salary recommendations from the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers.

Education department launches nationwide anti-bullying roadshow

Image: Screengrab The basic education department says it will embark on a nationwide roadshow in a bid to stamp out bullying at schools. This comes after Lufuno Mavhunga, a grade 10 pupil from Mbilwi High School in Limpopo, committed suicide after a video of her being bullied went viral online. The incident has been widely condemned and the pupil who committed the bullying was arrested on assault charges.  Addressing a National Assembly debate on bullying among pupils at schools on Thursday, basic education deputy minister Reginah Mhaule said the department will start the roadshow in Johannesburg.

Zondo Commission needs further R90m to complete its work, Parliament hears

Netwerk24 The Zondo Commission needs a further R90 million to complete its work by the end of June. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is discussing the matter with Treasury. Finance Minister Tito Mboweni in February said the commission shouldn t expect further funds. The Department of Justice and Correctional Services is in discussions with Treasury to find R90 million for the cash-strapped Zondo Commission to finish its work. On Wednesday, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola told the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development tat R75 million was reprioritised to fund the commission. AS IT HAPPENED | On Friday, director-general of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Doctor Mashabane told the committee that the money was to fund a deficit for the commission for the months January to March. He said the department was asked to scrape around to find the money.
