We respected people who hold these high positions. Were going to look forward to hearing from him tonight. Studies, Johns Hopkins university, in d. C. Ambassador edelman has served in senior positions at the department of state and defense as well as the white house. Hes served as u. S. Ambassador to finland and turkey and was Vice President dick cheneys Principal Deputy assistant for National Security affairs. Ambassador edelman has received several awards including a department of defense medal for distinguished public service, a distinguished civilian Service Award from the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and a president ial distinguished Service Award. Then to my far left, we have general doug lute. General lute has served most recently as the United States permanent representative to the north atlantic council, a position in which he retired in 2017. Previously general lute had a distinguished 35year career in the u. S. Army. He also served for a total of six years in the white house under both president s george w. Bush and barack obama. Good afternoon and welcome to the aspen institute. I am the executive director of the Strategy Group and formed and its a great pleasure to see this crowd. You will all be on cspan so be on your best behavior. We are here to launch an important book on the future of the u. S. China relationship called the struggle for power u. S. China relations in the 21st century. I want to say a word about that but first, recognize distinguished guests. I want to recognize the cochair of the organization, former secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice whos here with us. And youl you will be hearing fm secretary rice and about half an hour she will be one of our conversationalists. The harvard emeritus professor could not be here with us but is very much part of this effort.
