Good morning, everyone. Im dr. Kathleen hicks, and im so pleased to have joining me this morning the chief of staff of the army. General, welcome to csis. Thank you, dr. Hicks. Great to be here with you. Wonderful. Theres so many things we should be talking to you about today. But i know we have a limited amount of your time. I really want to focus more than anything on the pacific. And i know you come from the region relatively recently. The National Defense strategy is prioritized, and especially china and russia. But i think most people, when they think about the army, are thinking obviously a ground intensive environment like europe and not thinking about the pacific. Is the pacific really a priority for the army and what does it mean if it is . Yeah. Historically we focused on europe, but with the strategy that puts the indopacific as a top priority, its certainly a priority for us. As we take a look and havent been out in the pacific, that was my first overseas trip as a chief in

China relations in the 21st century. I want to say a word about that but first, recognize distinguished guests. I want to recognize the cochair of the organization, former secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice whos here with us. And youl you will be hearing fm secretary rice and about half an hour she will be one of our conversationalists. The harvard emeritus professor could not be here with us but is very much part of this effort. [applause] and you will be hearing from secretary rice in about half an hour she will be one of our conversationalists our good friend could not be here to the former secretary of defense bill and janet cohen. Welcome. [applause] and those that are involved in every effort across partisan lines and that is former National Security advisor. And rahm emanuel we have worked together i think all of us agree the relationship with china will be the greatest challenge we face as a country in the next several decades. And in that relationship to establish full diplomatic relations, ed jimmy carter and Deng Xiaoping but most of that time to the democratic administrations, we all felt that we were seeking cooperation with china that was the basic strategy in recent years there is no question that both countries have swung from cooperation to a strategy of competition and that gets to the heart of our Vital National interest
