Unlikely Cubs with 8 RBI in a game, Part 4

Unlikely Cubs with 8 RBI in a game, Part 4 By JohnW53 on Jun 9, 2021, 5:55am CDT + This is the fourth and last in a series of posts about the 4 lesser known of the 8 Cubs who have driven in 8 runs in a single game. The team record is 9, set by Heinie Zimmerman, in 1911, and tied by Sammy Sosa, in 2002. The more familiar names with 8 RBI are Rogers Hornsby, in 1931; Babe Herman, in 1933; Ron Santo, in 1970; and Dave Kingman, in 1978. Previous posts in this series described the big days of Lee Walls, in 1957; Ed Bailey, in 1965; and George Mitterwald, in 1974. .... During 10 seasons in the Major Leagues,

Cubs historical sleuthing: A 1970s moment in time

Cubs historical sleuthing: A 1970s moment in time Share this story Raymond Ade Here we have a Cubs action photo, clearly from the 1970s or 1980s. A Cubs catcher is picking up a ball near the first base dugout. When? What play was this? My (and your) first clue is that this was sent to me by reader Raymond Ade, who also sent me the photos of the San Diego Chicken that I posted here last month. Those photos were from July 8, 1979, so I began with the assumption that they might be from the same season. Interestingly, no one from the team the Cubs were playing that afternoon is visible in this photo. So I sent it to Mike Bojanowski to see if he could figure out what date this was from the teams on the scoreboard. The clock reads (approximately) 3:25 p.m. There’s no score listed on the Cubs line on the board (at that time the Cubs game was listed in the middle of the board), so we’re obviously looking at the second game of a doubleheader.

Swimmers greet the New Year with a pandemic version of the Polar Bear Plunge

There was no giant group photo and no post-swim potluck lunch. Dozens of brave people from across the county gathered Friday for a scaled-down, pandemic version of one of their favorite traditions: celebrating the new year by splashing in cold ocean water at La Jolla Shores beach. While many traditional elements were missing from the annual Polar Bear Plunge, the event started locally in the 1980s took place in a less formal way with smaller groups of swimmers practicing social distancing both in and out of the water. Kristin Jensen from Bay Park said she was fine with 2021’s more low-key, freelance version.
