On Sunday, Madison Bumgarner did what the Padres’ Joe Musgrove and the White Sox’s Carlos Rodón have already done this season: he pitched a game to its scheduled completion without allowing any hits. Yet the 31-year-old Diamondbacks lefty won’t get credit for an official no-hitter because his sterling effort took place in a seven-inning doubleheader game oddly enough, the nightcap of a twin bill that began with teammate Zac Gallen holding the Braves to a single hit.
Because Saturday night’s game at Truist Park was postponed due to inclement weather, the Diamondbacks and Braves met for the season’s 21st doubleheader, playing under the rules put in place early in the 2020 season as a means of helping teams make up postponements in expeditious fashion, particularly COVID-19-related ones. PHOENIX Steve Berthiaume and Bob Brenly will be the new television duo for the D-backs.
Berthiaume and Brenly were named on Thursday to replace Daron Sutton and Mark Grace. Grace s contract expired, and Sutton was not invited back despite having four seasons remaining on his contract.
The duo will be officially introduced on Nov. 5.
Brenly is very familiar to D-backs fans, given his history in both the broadcast booth and the dugout.
From 1998 to 2000, Brenly served as the team s TV analyst, paired with Thom Brennaman. Then, in 2001, he took over as the manager, and he led the D-backs to the 2001 World Series title. He was dismissed during the 2004 season; his .536 winning percentage is the highest in franchise history.
