Roundtable: What s behind the labor shortage?

Roundtable: What s behind the labor shortage? Galesburg Register-Mail It s easier to judge, isn t it? I did the math. I encourage others to do so as well. Minimum wage in Illinois is currently $11 per hour. I consulted the Illinois Department of Employment Security so trust my math (St. Joseph Academy nuns were relentless about me understanding math). At 40 hours per week (and with the Federal kicker of $300 per week) an $11 hourly worker that has been laid off is now making about $12.67 an hour. The key word here is laid off and not fired. Some of you may find this outrageous that anyone makes $12.67 an hour for NOT working. You need to consider that most of this money will go back into the local economy. I would also hope that a reasonable person would not judge someone who is unemployed. It is easier to judge though, isn’t it?  All those people milking the system! How Christian of you to judge. Try to understand the circumstance of THAT person’s plight. Roundtable: What about council s opposition to mayor s nominee?

Roundtable: What about council s opposition to mayor s nominee? Galesburg Register-Mail Not convinced Smith-Esters is best for Ward 5 I don’t know the qualifications of Jaclyn Smith-Esters, so I can’t really say too much. However, listening to Peter Schwartzman’s reasoning as to why he selected her, wasn’t enough for me. There are people in Ward 5 who are very passionate about getting involved. I believe Kristine Crow is in Ward 5, and she’s very qualified.  Instead of aldermen focusing on the city as a whole, focus on your ward and maybe we can see better progress. We need people who are familiar with their neighborhoods. Dwight White grew up in the 4th Ward, which I’m also very familiar with. It’s been neglected too long and know he will press for change. Sarah Davis is new but passionate.

Roundtable: Remove troops from Afghanistan?

Roundtable: Remove troops from Afghanistan? Galesburg Register-Mail We cannot compel a people to conform When Afghanistan refused to take action against al-Qaida after 9/11, the United States invaded to dislodge Bin Laden. We drove out the Taliban government and installed a more friendly regime, hoping it would achieve democratic legitimacy. After 20 years, it’s clear that hope has failed. The Afghan government cannot defeat the Taliban in the field or win over a solid majority of the Afghan people. And the military force America would have to commit to defeat an insurgency embedded in the civilian population requires a politically and morally unacceptable level of military and civilian casualties.
