The pandemic has devastated the restaurant industry nationwide. In New Jersey, it is estimated that at least 40% of its more than 19,000 restaurants won t make it. Its northern region has hardly been spared. In the past year, some of North Jersey s most steadfast, most cherished spots shuttered.
Yet despite the harsh economic headwinds restaurants face indoor dining limited to 25% by health protocols and outdoor dining hindered by cold weather some in North Jersey are doing well. Some are doing so well they re adding staff. Some locations.
I talked to seven local restaurant owners who are prospering despite the adversities of COVID-19. A few, however, declined to talk out of consideration for those restaurateurs who are struggling to keep their doors open. With everything going on, said one, I want to be under the radar. I feel like it would be bragging when others aren t as blessed as I am. Said another simply, I m not one to gloat. �
