Where to Find a Truly Great Mask in Seattle

Remember when we stressed about the idea of wearing masks in public for a few months? Remember when a few months felt like a long time? With nearly a year of expertise under our noses, here are some of the best masks our editors have found in Seattle—the comfy, the snug, the adorable.  Keep in mind that layering these with surgical masks, or upgrading to some more serious coverage in higher risk situations, may be the move. Stats: $20 (full price), two layers (with slot for filter), nose wire, adjustable ear loops. SoDo-based Outdoor Research, usually a maker of waterproof ski jackets and such, was one of the first recreational gear companies to go big on masks. It dedicated its Seattle factory to making PPE back in March 2020, setting a goal of 200,000 masks per day way before most of us were wearing them. The Essential mask isn t cheap—though it s currently on sale for $15—but it comes with three removable filters and adjustable ear loops, plus a snug

Anastacia-Reneé s Frye Show Is a Blistering Look at Gentrification

(Don’t Be Absurd) Alice In Parts opens at the museum later this month. By Stefan Milne 2/4/2021 at 9:00am First, there was a voice. She didn’t even have a name, at least not on the page. The voice was so strong that she got called Alice Metropolis. Then she grew into a character in a stage show, 9 Ounces, which ran in various theaters for a couple years. Then people started checking in with Anastacia-Reneé, who was Seattle’s civic poet from 2017 to 2019, about what was up with Alice. How was she doing?  Anastacia-Reneé had conceived the character (not an alter ego, though they share some qualities: If Alice and I were having coffee, there would be some things she said that I’d say, Oh my god, Alice, me too ), so she started writing a book of poems about Alice. A James W. Ray Distinguished Artist literary award led to an exhibition in the Frye Art Museum. It only seemed natural to give Alice this kind of platform.

Seattle s Blue Moon Tavern and the Fight for Historical Buildings

Seattle s Blue Moon Tavern and the Fight for Historical Buildings The University District dive, featured in a new PBS show, turns 87 this year. Can it persist as a piece of living history? By Stefan Milne 1/15/2021 at 10:00am At the end of his 1999 HistoryLink article on the University District’s Blue Moon Tavern, Walter Crowley wrote that the bar’s lease had been extended to 2034, “which, barring disaster, will mark the centennial of its founding.” Disaster is upon us. Disaster in the 20 percent of Seattle restaurants and bars that permanently closed in six months. Disaster in the music venues, now silent for 10 months, which may at any moment become forever.

Everything That Happened in Seattle This Year, Non-Covid Edition

JANUARY 13 JANUARY 14 Boeing s dismal annual sales report isn t even its worst news of the month. That came less than a week earlier, when the aerospace giant handed over more than 100 pages of damning documents to Congress that revealed deception and recklessness in the development of the 737 Max, the model involved in crashes had killed 346 people. JANUARY 20 Félix Hernández signs a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves, officially ending his reign as Mariners ace. JANUARY 22 A shooting at Third and Pine leaves a woman dead and seven others injured just before rush hour, leading to gridlock, soaring rideshare rates, and heightened heightened downtown distress.
