much have reached an agreement. obviously, they are working on this. and we hope to have the papers done and ready to go by tomorrow. we hope to pass it by tomorrow night. so here s what we know about the deal. it calls for $1.37 billion to create 50 miles of new border wall. that can be a design, anything of the border patrol wants including the president s newly-designed steel slat fence. it also includes $1.7 billion in funding for new border technology. the president already indicating, though, that he is going to spend more money than that, tweeting this morning, was just presented a concept and parameters by hardworking senator richard shelby. looking over all the aspects, knowing that this would be hooked up with lots of money from other sources of this concept of lots of money from other sources is the latest point between democrats in congress. he s got what is called transferred to it down like a fairy. he can move money that s already appropriated around the government. i
workers will miss their checks. it looks like we re headed to the longest shutdown. next friday federal district courts will run out of money. civil cases could be postponed or suspended and on the 25th they miss another paycheck. that s not ideal. that s what we re hearing from folks outside of washington who have been talking with members of our team. gabe gutierrez in new mexico. what s been the reaction to the developments over the last 12 hours or so? good morning. well, people in sunland park, new mexico were watching closely. this is a border fence. a steel slat fence which is kind of what the president has been referring to as of late. if you can look right across here, that is actually the outskirts of juarez, mexico. this is one of the areas where before this fence was built
refusal to give the necessary money for border security that s the cause of the shutdown. we get all of that. we re not interested in laying any blame. the president really does believe that you can solve this in ten minutes. we re asking for $5.6 billion. they re offering us zero. sounds like we re arguing about one variable which is how much are we going to spend on that barrier on the southern border, on the wall, on the steel slat fence, whatever you want to call it. this should be relatively simple. i m forced back to the conclusion that the democrats, for better or worse, think they are winning this battle politically and they re really not interested in opening the government because they think the president is paying a price politically. that s unfortunate. the reason i described it the way i did is because the senate, which is republican controlled, passed a clean government spending bill which included no wall money because they were under the impression that was going to b
anything other than a manufactured emergency. and acting white house chief of staff mick mulvaney also took to the airwaves today, and on cnn he talked about the president and this shutdown. listen. the president really does believe you could solve this in 10 minutes. we re asking for $5.6 billion. they re offering us zero. it sounds like we re asking for one variable. just how much are we going to spend on that barrier, on the southern border, on the steel slat fence, whatever you want to call it? this should be relatively simple. so sahil, if it s so simple, what is this all about? it s simple, the president gets what he wants, but democrats aren t willing to give him what he wants. i think there is no way around that impasse unless democrats are willing to give the president $5.7 billion for the wall or the president is drread to back down. it s the reason for his rise in the republican party.
to make a choice between paying her utilities or buying groceries? a couple different things. certainly, the president understands, there s no question, that the shutdown has costs, which is why we ve been negotiating or trying to negotiate now since before the shutdown began, but you just said something i have to push back on a little bit, which is that the president s demand is the reason the government is shut down. that s certainly one side of the coin, but keep in mind, it takes two to tango. in this town. i could just as easily say it s the democrats refusal to give the necessary money for border security that is the cause of the shutdown. we get all that. we re not interested in laying any blame. the president really believes that you could solve this in ten minutes. we re asking for $5.6 billion. they re offering us zero. it sounds like we re simply arguing about one variable, which is how much are we going to spend on that barrier on the southern border, on the wall, on the
