Des Moines, IA- A new bill proposed in the Iowa Senate would reinstate the death penalty in Iowa. The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports that the bill would allow a death sentence for murder in the first degree when it involves the kidnapping or sexual abuse of children. The bill was reintroduced to the Senate Judiciary Committee by State Senator Brad Zaun of Urbandale. Similar bills were introduced in 2019 and 2021 but never reached the Senate floor for a vote. Capital Punishment was abolished in Iowa by Governor Harold Hughes in 1965, and legislation to reinstate it has not been debated in the legislature since 1995.

A second Republican has entered the primary race in Iowa’s third Congressional district. Nicole Hasso, who lives in the Des Moines suburb of Johnston and works for the Principal Financial Group, launched her campaign on July 7.
I’m having trouble embedding Hasso’s introductory video, which was posted on YouTube and her campaign’s Facebook page.
Here’s my transcript of the video, in which the candidate speaks throughout.
I was never supposed to end up here. Well, not according to the Democratic Party, anyway.
I am Nicole Hasso. I am a conservative Republican, and if you hadn’t noticed, I am a Black woman.
