Report: Low Taxes, Less Regulations Bring American Prosperity

13 May 2021 The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) released on Wednesday its 14th annual Rich States, Poor States report, which reveals once again states with the lowest taxes, fewer regulations, and more worker freedom offer a better standard of living for those who reside there. Laffer, and Stephen Moore noted on a conference call with reporters on Tuesday that the winners and losers fall along the blue state/red state divide. Some lawmakers WVII spoke with fear the low pay could lead to more people not serving in the Maine Legislature. Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, is sponsoring a bill called “An Act to Ensure the Continuance of a Citizen Legislature by Tying Future Pay to the State Minimum Wage,” which aims to change that. “It’s the very, very low pay. Not keeping up with the rate of inflation, which is not keeping up with the cost of living, which is really making it impossible for the vast majority of citizens of the state to serve in the citizen legislature,” Berry told WVII.

January 1, 2021 Most employees must be paid the Maryland State Minimum Wage Rate. Tipped Employees (earning more than $30 per month in tips) must earn the State Minimum Wage Rate per hour. Employers must pay at least $3.63 per hour. This amount plus tips must equal at least the State Minimum Wage Rate. Subject to the adoption of related regulations, restaurant employers who utilize a tip credit are required to provide employees with a written or electronic wage statement for each pay period showing the employee’s effective hourly rate of pay including employer paid cash wages plus tips for tip credit hours worked for each workweek of the pay period.
