This year’s Whitsun Festival in Salzburg blew audiences away with Händel s first oratorio ‘Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno’.
The oratorio in two parts is masterly stage directed by Robert Carsen with artistic direction from Cecilia Bartoli.
This 2021 edition of the festival was dedicated by Bartoli to her native city of Rome where Händel created the piece. It was his first ever oratorio and he wrote it at the young age of 22 on his first trip to the city.
Rome as an inspiration
Bartoli tells us that in Händel’s music “there is all this energy”, “you can almost picture how Händel felt when he arrived in Rome, this baroque city, with different styles”.

The Marriage of Figaro to audiences in the theater and online. The Boulder company is tiny, but I thought it would be interesting to see what they could do. Stage Director Michael Travis Risner set the time in the present and provided doors, potted trees, a table with a side chair, an armchair, and a few props for his setting. It fit the list of bare necessities required by the story and allowed the cast to provide considerable amusement throughout Risner s production.
Although the production was minimal but adequate, the costumes did not distinguish the nobles from the peasants and in some cases did not keep characters from fading into the background. Opera America Launches Opera Grants For Female Stage Directors And Conductors
OPERA America has announced the launch of the Opera Grants for Female Stage Directors and Conductors program, a new initiative developed to advance gender parity in the field by incentivizing opera companies to hire women for key artistic leadership roles. The grants are generously funded by the Marineau Family Foundation.
Female-identifying stage directors and conductors have been consistently underrepresented in opera productions, on average comprising fewer than 30 percent of the directors and fewer than 15 percent of the conductors in recent seasons.
The Stage Director and Conductor Grants will help OPERA America s Professional Company Members increase the number of women in these roles. Grants of as much as $10,000 will cover up to 50 percent of the fee of a female stage director or conductor who is contracted for the first time by an applicant company.
