New trial aims to reduce frailty and improve mental health by connecting older Australians and preschoolers
In an Australian first, scientists will today begin a pilot trial bringing together older adults and preschoolers to assess the mutual health benefits of intergenerational activity, such as reducing frailty and depression.
Inspired by the award-winning ABC series, Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds, the Intergenerational Integration Initiative will see older adults and young children engage in a structured series of investigative, artistic and educational activities together.
Evidence suggests these planned intergenerational activities might reduce frailty and improve mood and thinking skills in the older adults, and also improve empathy and language development and reduce age stereotypes in the younger participants.

MORE than £200 was raised by the Cecilia Consort carolling group outside St Nicolas’ Church in an hour on Saturday afternoon.
Father Christmas, aka Zachary Rae, collected money from passers-by and both Newbury Cancer Care and The Cecilia Consort 30th Anniversary Fund will share the collection equally.
The idea to get together came from local musicians Fiona Bennett and John Heritage, who decided it was time to bring a little Christmas cheer to Newbury shoppers, so they contacted St Nicolas’ Church and their Cecilia Consort pals and together made up an octet of Cecilians past and present.

HERE’S something to cheer us all up – St Nicolas’ Church, Newbury, has hosted one of its first weddings this year.
Ben Corbridge tied the knot with fiancée Laura Davey on Saturday, December 5.
Mr Corbridge, a 32-year-old investment expert for Barclays, said: “We finally succeeded in our fifth attempt to get married in 2020.
“We had previously intended to get married up in my ancestral home in Northumbria and had moved the date back several times with each impending lockdown.
