The city had recorded a low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which was the lowest temperature in Srinagar since 1991. Srinagar had recorded minus 8.3 degrees Celsius in 1995. The temperature has fallen to minus 11.3 degrees Celsius in 1991.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 8.4 degree Celsius, the coldest temperature recorded in the city since 1991 when the mercury had plunged to minus 11.8 degree Celsius, officials in the weather department said. In 1995, the minimum temperature was minus 11.3 degree Celsius.  According to the weather office, the lowest recorded minimum temperate in Srinagar was minus 14.4 degrees Celsius in 1893.

The Kashmir Valley reeled under severe cold, with Srinagar city the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recording its lowest minimum temperature in eight years, the Meteorological Department said here on Wednesday. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 7.8 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest temperature recorded in the city in eight years, an official of the MET department said. He said the exact same minimum temperature was recorded in the city in 2012 on January 14. The rest of the valley was also reeling under intense cold. Pahalgam tourist destination, which also serves as a base camp for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 11.7 degrees Celsius down from the previous night s minus 5.6 degrees Celsius.
