According to a statement issued by the Department of Government Information, 636 persons among those who tested positive yesterday were associates of the Peliyagoda COVID-19 cluster. The patients detected yesterday brought the total number of patients detected in the island to 42,702. The count includes 1,680 Sri Lanka returnees from abroad, 950 Navy personnel and their contacts, and 651 persons linked to the Kandakadu cluster.

Registration required for those undertaking Sri Pada pilgrimage

Elders discouraged from travelling Those who wish to undertake the pilgrimage to Sri Pada this season are required to register the pilgrims’ group with the relevant Divisional Secretariat. They are also required to carry two copies of the certificate of registration with them when they travel, District Secretary/Government Agent of Rathnapura Malini Lokupothgama has directed. One copy is to be kept with the travellers while the other is to be produced to inspectors at check points at Nallathanniya, Warangala and Palabaddala prior at the start of the journey. Several new measures have been imposed for the Sri Pada pilgrimage season for 2020/2021 due to COVID-19 with wearing face masks, keeping distance, and following proper health guidelines while on pilgrimage are all mandatory. The season began yesterday with Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day.

A series of religious activities to mark the beginning of the season were held at the Sri Pada Raja Maha Viharaya temple in Galpottawela, Ratnapura yesterday. Processions carrying the sacred casket of Relics of the Buddha, sacred objects, and the statue of God Saman from the Temple to the Sri Pada maluwa were held yesterday and devotees had the opportunity to pay homage to them until this morning.
