Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his wife and two bodyguards, left aboard a Sri Lankan Air Force plane for the city of Male, the capital of the Maldives. The president would most likely proceed to another Asian country from there, Reuters reported.
As the acting President, Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has declared a nationwide state of emergency, hours after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country leading to more protests.
He has requested that a person agreeable to both the government and the opposition should be appointed as the prime minister under an all-party government.
