The Spring Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen will vote later this month on a new contract with Battle of Franklin Trust nonprofit, which would take over management operations at Historic Rippavilla Plantation.
Last month, BOMA in a split vote approved a letter of intent with the BOFT, granting the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization 60 days to finalize an official management contract, which would be drawn up by Spring Hill City Attorney Patrick Carter. It now sits on the BOMA s agenda for its upcoming May 17 regular meeting.
The mission of The Battle of Franklin Trust is to preserve, understand, and interpret the story of a people forever impacted by the American Civil War. BOFT manages two historic Civil War sites in Franklin the Carter House and Carnton.

In late March, approximately 160 descendants from families who built, owned and lived at city-owned Rippavilla historic mansion visited the Spring Hill property, many for the first time.
Even though some had never met before, the gathering was like a long overdue family reunion. People flew in from Oklahoma, Kansas, California, Texas, all over. I was astounded, and we were so happy, Rippavilla Inc. nonprofit interim director Scott Smith said.
With the pending temporary closing of the mansion s doors looming over the occasion following the city s decision to terminate its management contract with Rippavilla Inc. many expected the event to be, more or less, like a funeral, Smith said. But it turned out to be a celebration, one that connected many long-lost family members with hugs and smiles.

The Battle of Franklin Trust is a 501(c)(3) organization that manages two historic Civil War Battle of Franklin sites, Carter House and Carnton, in Franklin.
Interim city administrator Pam Caskie said BOFT was the only applicant to submit a contract proposal, and that a new management contract would likely go up for a vote in May. If approved, the contract would go into effect May 24.
The city owns the historic property. For me, it s important that we get the contract right, that we recognize all the things that need to be in this contract when you have a contract operator from another jurisdiction, Caskie said. It is our intent for the Battle of Franklin Trust to begin their management contract on May 24, which is the day after the last wedding that we have to oversee. This letter of intent sets forward what would happen with the contract.
