George Springer has passed his physical and his six-year contract with the Blue Jays is now official. For those who are still suffering from the trauma of the Michael Brantley non-signing, there are no takebacks on this deal.
OFFICIAL: We’ve signed 3x All-Star, 2x Silver Slugger, and World Series MVP George Springer to a 6-year contract.
According to Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi, Springer’s annual salary from his $150-million contract is structured to peak at $28 million in 2022 the slight front-loading of the deal allows the Blue Jays to deal with the expected escalation of money owed to their young core as they enter into their early arbitration years. Springer can also expect bonuses for All-Star Game selections and other major awards. The deal means that the Blue Jays will control him through his age-36 year.

New York Yankees general manger Brian Cashman wants to re-sign free-agent second baseman DJ LeMahieu. But he may have missed his best chance to do that, based on what ESPN’s Jeff Passan is reporting.
The Blue Jays, sources said, have emerged as significant players in the LeMahieu sweepstakes perhaps the biggest threat to him re-signing with the
, with whom a significant gap remains. The Mets also have expressed interest in LeMahieu.
That the Mets are in the mix is no surprise, given new owner Steve Cohen’s desire to make a splash. And the Blue Jays appear to be making a full-court press to sign LeMahieu. Last week, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reported “the Blue Jays have been engaged with all the top free agents on the market, including LeMahieu, George Springer, J.T. Realmuto and Trevor Bauer.”
