BIG RAPIDS After a career of protecting, serving and defending his country, Big Rapids native and U.S. Army Master Sergeant Jeffrey Saum was laid to rest over the weekend.
Saum, 33, passed away Dec. 7, 2020, in Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
At the age of 20, Saum a 2006 Big Rapids High graduate enlisted in the United States Army in January 2008 as a 25U, Signal Support Systems Specialist.
He completed Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Gordon, Georgia.

LANSING, Mich. â Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered Michigan and U.S. flags on public grounds to be lowered at half-staff in honor of Army Master Sgt. Jeffrey Saum.
âOur state mourns the loss of Army Master Sergeant Jeffrey Saum as he is laid to rest today,â says Governor Whitmer. âThe flags will be lowered to honor his life and signal our gratitude for his selfless service to our state and nation in the United States Army.â
The order was issued this afternoon to occur simultaneously with Master Sgt. Saumâs funeral.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Masrour Barzani, emphasized the need for illegal armed groups to leave the Kurdistan Region in a meeting on Monday with the Commanding General of Special Operations Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (SOJTF-OIR), Brig. Gen. Guillaume Beaurper.
This was necessary, Barzani stressed, for the Region to be able to mobilize all of its abilities and resources for the common fight against terrorism.
