Big Rapids native, Army Master Sergeant, laid to rest  Flags flown at half-staff in honor of Jeffrey Saum FacebookTwitterEmail Army Master Sergeant Jeffrey Saum BIG RAPIDS After a career of protecting, serving and defending his country, Big Rapids native and U.S. Army Master Sergeant Jeffrey Saum was laid to rest over the weekend. Saum, 33, passed away Dec. 7, 2020, in Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado. At the age of 20, Saum a 2006 Big Rapids High graduate enlisted in the United States Army in January 2008 as a 25U, Signal Support Systems Specialist. He completed Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Gordon, Georgia.

Big Rapids Commemorates Fallen Solider with Procession

9 & 10 News December 18, 2020 Sergeant First Class Jeffery Saum passed away on December 7th at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. On Friday, the city wanted to welcome him home and lay him to rest by acknowledging his service. Sergeant Jeffery Saum is a Big Rapids native. He graduated from Big Rapids High School in 2006. Squad cars and a firetruck led a procession through Big Rapids. They came from U.S 131 down Perry Street, then went south on State Street, and ended at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home. Homefront Military Liaison, Debra Ankerson says, “For the families they’re broken, they’re sad. When they get cards or people coming through or in this situation a procession, it’s just a very honorable service to him and therefore to the family.”
