The Associated Student Government Senate met Wednesday and passed two resolutions: one to honor alumni veterans and active service members and another to approve Election Commission guidelines ahead of its February presidential election. The first resolution passed this quarter, presented by NU Political Union Speaker Edward Dowd, would create a day of remembrance for members.
The Associated Student Government Senate distributed $5,000 from its New Student Organization Support Fund during its Wednesday night meeting. The fund, which ASG pioneered this year, is specifically dedicated to student groups that have existed for two years or less. The fund allocates a total of $15,000 annually, split between Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters. .
In its second meeting of Fall Quarter, Northwestern’s Associated Student Government Senate elected and appointed 20 students to several of its internal boards and discussed upcoming financial and inclusion initiatives. “There were a lot of elections, and I’m really excited about the new committee members,” School of Education and Social Policy senior and Speaker of.
Five hundred seventy-seven students voted in ASG Senate elections over the weekend, with turnout approximately 35% higher than in last year’s elections. That was also more than triple the record-low turnout in ASG presidential elections last spring, when 175 students cast ballots. 57Associated Student Government elections for the 2023-24 academic year will take place Thursday through Sunday, offering students the opportunity to select who will represent them in ASG’s primary legislative body. Voting opens at 7 p.m. on Thursday and closes at 7 p.m. on Sunday. All undergraduate students are eligible to vote and can do so.
