More, all coming in right here to cnn news central. Any moment now we expect the gilgo beach Serial Killer suspect to appear in court. This is rex heuermanns first appearance since pleading not guilty to the murder of three women. Police believe heuermann may have, in fact, committed those killings inside his familys home when his wife and two children were out of town and after an intensive search of the property his wifes attorney shared these photos of the aftermath of that search. Cnns jean casarez joins us live from outside the courthouse. Jean, often these appearances are procedural, but what do we expect to happen today and soon after . Reporter well, we just understood that media was just allowed into the courtroom, so it has not quite begun yet, but i think any minute this conference, this case has been set for conference today. I was told is the proper terminology. Ive been told by the Public Information officer theres nothing formally set that they are going to discuss, but
Office. What any of that portends is anyones guess at this hour. We have eyes on entrances and exits of that courthouse. Journalists there standing by and a few trained ears to the ground. As soon as we know something, anything at all, we will let you know. We should know today marks two weeks since donald trump announced that he had received a Target Letter in this case. It suggests he could be charged with Conspiracy To Defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct the january 6th session of congress, and depriving voters of their rights. Here with me are my guests. First, lets bring in justice and intelligence correspondent ken dilanian, who has been following all this for us today. Ken, bring us up to speed for what we do know at this hour. Reporter greetings from the department of justice, where we are not so patiently waiting for news that explains the developments you just laid out. There are a lot of uncertainties around this process, because this is two weeks to the day si
it s been a long time coming. a manhattan grand jury votes to indict donald trump, making him the first former president ever charged with a crime. there is no crime it s a bad act. i ll speak to cy vance who first opened this litigation this is legal voodoo. the gop, rallies to his defense before knowing the specifics of the actual criminal charges he s facing. this is nothing short of a political prosecution. will the twice-impeached former president continue to be seen as a positive force inside the gop? politically it s a it s going to be damaging, i think, to the republican party. and what will this indictment do to our already divided politics i ll talk to leading as the march madness tournament comes to a close i ll talk centrist joe manchin of west virginia and pay to play. as the march madness tournament comes to a close, i ll talk to ncaa president of former republican governor of massachusetts charlie baker on the challenge of how to pay c
in the january 6th hearings? my best guess is we will actually learn a good degree more than we learned from the january 6th hearings. i say that both because the special counsel, as we know, has conducted a sprawling investigation. he s cast a wide net. he s talked to dozens of witnesses looked at presumably hundreds of thousands of dollars and has a lot more information than the january 6th committee did. you ll recall when the special counsel filed the mar-a-lago indictment he filed what s known as a speak indictment, to say it contained a lot of extra facts and detail that he didn t to include, but he wanted to include to make sure the public understood the evidentiary basis he had for bringing the charges. i suspect he s going to follow a similar approach if and when he indicts in connection with january 6th. you re expecting this would be rather wholesome in what you would be able to read? i do. you ll recall in the mar-a-lago indictment, he actually had
the facts have been obvious for a long time. the facts were obvious during our hearings last summer. i think the facts have only gotten more compelling since, and i suspect the speak indictment in this case will reveal some new facts. as ken said earlier, there s some folks that didn t want to cooperate with us that are probably cooperating with the special counsel. but a lot of this noise about the indictments and the counts, it will come down to what happened, and what happened has been clear for a long time. it is pretty revolutionary, and it s all going to play out in the coming days. one of the things, i think a lot of people have noticed throughout this big lie campaign by donald trump to say that the election was stolen, was the big grift, was the money that was raised on the back of this big lie. i want to play for you this sound bite, talking about that specifically, and i ll get your thoughts afterwards.
