Spartanburg extends mask law, one councilwoman asks if it s enough

As COVID-19 cases continue to spike throughout the Upstate, the city of Spartanburg will continue requiring masks inside grocery stores and pharmacies within city limits. But before the city council voted to extend that ordinance another 60 days, Councilwoman Meghan Smith asked city staff if they’ve explored stricter rules aimed at protecting the public from the virus. “I’ve grown increasingly more concerned, anxious, worried, over these numbers,” Smith said during Monday night’s council meeting. “We are seeing the results of Thanksgiving, and we have Christmas and New Year’s coming up. (We) find ourselves in a very difficult situation with the extremely limited jurisdictional tools we have in our toolbox as a small city government.”
