Firdous-Sonia scuffle and rule of law
May 12, 2021
Earlier this month, the special assistant to the Chief Minister Punjab on Information and Culture created a ruckus when she visited a Ramzan bazar in Sialkot. Firdous Ashiq Awan was caught on camera publicly admonishing Assistant Commissioner Sialkot Sonia Sadaf over over the standard of produce being sold.
The video went viral and many politicians came out in support of the AC and demanded that Firdous apologise for publicly humiliating a competent and professional woman who also happens to be extremely well-educated. Naturally, the opposition PMLN was quick to side with Sadaf against the ruling PTI’s Firdous. But, so too, was Chief Secretary Punjab Jawad Rafique Malik. Elsewhere, the country’s entire bureaucracy, including Civil Services Academy, have called Firdous to apologise.

There is a famous saying: ‘If you are going to sin, sin against God, not the bureaucracy. God will forgive you but the bureaucracy won’t.’
This a lesson that Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan recently learned. Earlier this week, the special assistant to the Chief Minister Punjab had visited a Ramzan market in Sialkot. Her ‘sin’ was getting caught on camera berating Assistant Commissioner Sonia Sadaf over the ‘third-class’ produce on sale there. The footage soon went viral and social media was on fire, condemning the politician’s bad behaviour.
Dr Firdous has been lambasted for humiliating a woman civil servant in this manner. But I, for one, applaud her. Especially as the incident points to a bigger problem: the never-ending standoff between bureaucrats and the elected representatives of the people. A large number of Pakistan’s bureaucrats are busy plotting at their chessboards. History has shown us that many want nothing more than to send the govern
Imran Khan to âhurricaneâ Firdous â two street visits to show Pakistan govt at work
Pakistani politicians from all parties have used the Ramzan month for PR activity in the past. But only Imran Khan govt has managed to pull off such a self-contradictory show.

Last year, this time, we were discussing the storm that was âcolonel ki biwiâ. This year, we have âhurricaneâ Firdous taking over the reins of Pakistani peopleâs attention.
It so happened that the adviser to the chief minister of Punjab, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, while visiting a special Ramzan bazaar in Sialkot, reprimanded an assistant commissioner over the âpoorâ quality of some fruits at a shop. Firdous lost her temper, not the first time though, questioning the official, Sonia Sadaf, about the âthird-class fruitâ put up on sale. â

LAHORE: The Punjab Higher Education Commission (HEC) came under criticism in the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday for what the lawmakers said not giving space to administrators of various universities to function.
“The PML-N government unnecessarily established the HEC, which kept the [administrative] systems of universities paralysed in the last 10 years,” Speaker Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said during the Question Hour pertaining to the Higher Education Department.
“We’re now mourning the unnecessary tasks undertaken by the PML-N government. There’s a need to change the whole higher education system in the province,” said the speaker in an unusual grilling of the former ruling party.
