5 tips for new lawyers who want to go solo

It seems like only yesterday that I walked across the stage, received my law degree and shook hands with my law school dean. Fast forward 10 years. I learned a lot along the way. There were stressful cases and sleepless nights. There were mean judges and even meaner court staff. There were unreasonable opposing counsel and insurance adjusters who manufactured nonexistent law. Former Boies Schiller lawyer refused to leave new firm after partnership voted him out, lawsuit says

Former Boies Schiller lawyer refused to leave new firm after partnership voted him out, lawsuit says   Image from Shutterstock.com. A partner in a firm formed by former lawyers at Boies Schiller Flexner refused to leave after he was ousted for abusive behavior in a partnership vote, according to a lawsuit filed Saturday. The Feb. 27 lawsuit by law firm Roche Cyrulnik Freedman says partner Jason Cyrulnik was ousted for “abusive, destructive, erratic and obstructive behavior.” Cyrulnik’s abusive behavior included screaming at partners and attempting to assume control over management decisions, the lawsuit alleges. “Rather than accept payment for his work and focus on ensuring a smooth transition,” the lawsuit says, “this expelled partner now refuses to leave, attempting to shake down his former firm for millions of dollars he did not earn and to which he is not entitled.”

Solo practitioners saw steeper revenue declines amid COVID-19, new report finds

Solo practitioners saw steeper revenue declines amid COVID-19, new report finds   Image from Shutterstock.com. Solo practitioners had a harder time weathering the initial economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic than others in the legal industry, according to a new report that cloud-based company Clio released on Tuesday. From April through June 2020, solos saw their revenue drop between 5% and 7% more than firms with more lawyers, according to Clio’s Legal Trends for Solo Law Firms. In May alone, solo practitioners’ revenue declined by 19% compared to the previous year. The steeper revenue decline came even as the drop in new casework solos experienced was similar to the decreases at larger firms, according to the report.
