Were told that a transformer underground blew up, causing the smoke to come through the Manhole Covers. Now, police, firefighters, peco crews are on the scene, trying to get the situation under control. Several buildings in and around walnut st. Have been evacuated. We know one building had smoke inside. There are about 100 customers without power. Crews here at the scene know the bumm being of the customers are in society hill towers. We talked with chef walter, from the city tavern restaurant, about the situation. Very severe. They were afraid some of the Manhole Covers would blow up. So we had to evacuate, all of my staff is hanging out here, all of the people have reservations forlorn love have to find another place i guess. I dont know. Not only thunderstorms, but severe thunderstorms are likely as a line of showers and storms moves to the east. Damaging winds is the greatest threat with this not the flooding like we saw yesterday. Theres even a threat of one or two tornadoes in the area by the time the day is over. The highest risk of storms as you can see, is in our part of the country. Especially from the philadelphia area, north and west, most of our pennsylvania counties, included in all of this and extreme northwest delaware. Anywhere in that yellow area has a threat for severe storms during the day today. Were dry now. Early showers moved out, so there may be clouds around. But its not going to rain for quite a while. This is the activity thats going to be moving our way. Its going to be strengthening as it goes into the hotter and more humid air. Clouds have kept the temperatures down a bit. That time some storms to start to move into areas like Lancaster County berks county poconos, Lehigh Valley you should already start seeing storms by 6 00 p. M. Then that threat shifts over to the east a little more so upper Montgomery County Chester County upper bucks county moving still through the allentown area by 7 00 p. M. And then that whole area slides through philadelphia. We could also see storms in parts of delaware into south jersey. That would be by 8 00 this evening. At this time we do expect some of these storms to be strong to severe. Then we will continue seeing this whole area shift off through new jersey heading to the shore closer to 9 00 and then by 10 00, i think the threat should be mostly over. But either way we are tracking severe storms off to our west right now. They are approaching so coming up we will give you a closer look at the timing as they move in and what you can expect locally.
