Taipei, March 1 (CNA) The owner of a Taichung-based daycare center and three caregivers were fined a combined NT$750,000 (US$26,785) for "mistreating" infants in their care on multiple occasions last year, the city's Social Affairs Bureau said Tuesday.
Taichung is to introduce harsher punishments for individuals found guilty of child abuse, the Taichung City Government said on Wednesday, after it has been criticized for imposing the minimum fine of NT$60,000 in child abuse cases.
The announcement came after the New Power Party (NPP) criticized the city for being too lenient in several abuse cases at daycare centers.
The NPP told a news conference earlier in the day that since Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) took office in December 2018, at least seven cases of alleged child abuse by caregivers at daycare centers have been reported in the city.

Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) on Friday pledged an investigation into allegations of child abuse by the staff at a daycare center in the city’s Nantun District (南屯).
Lu said that she had issued a directive ordering the city’s Social Affairs Bureau to investigate allegations against caregivers at Hwa Shin Infant Care Center and submit a report by tomorrow.
Lu made the statement after parents at a news conference earlier in day presented video footage from February last year that they said showed their children being physically abused by different caregivers at Hwa Shin.
