hour. thank you very much, mike viqueira. reporter: okay. let s go now to msnbc meteorologist bill karins, who s monitoring all of the activity of this storm. so, what s the latest out there? good morning, alex and everyone. there s two sides to this storm. one is, if you have power and heat in your house and you re seeing the two feet of snow, it s fun. you can shovel, it s the weekend, the kids can play. but now for the 250,000-plus people without power, looking at the forecast knowing tonight is going to be in the single digits or teens, we re talking about dangerous conditions as we go throughout the next two or three days. there are actually shelters opening up for people in the mid-atlantic, people that do not have power or heat. this is reagan national airport. we talked earlier to one of the spokespeople. no flights will go in and out of that airport during the day today and said for the most part they are closed and they re going to be doing as much snow removal as they
and moves this country forward and rescuers the american dream for another generation. thanks very much, everybody. god bless. the president striking a familiar theme to that friendly audience there, those assembled for the democratic national committee gathering at the capitol hilton, talking about change. we heard that word many times in the about 20-minute or so speech there. the president tireless, reflecting a saturday morning, a little bit more casual there for the president on this very snowy morning. we were showing you the other side a couple times, the president talking about digging out from the economy at the very same time you saw people shoveling out the snow there from the driveway around the white house. the president at the capitol hilton and will be heading back to the white house shortly. so, after this, let s go to our top story of the day, that being the snow, that weather out there. let s get right to bill karins, nbc meteorologist, for an update on how things a
are working sort of a limited schedule. those are mostly in the central and southern portions of the state. i don t have any information right now about the airports in northern virginia. the best advice is call your airline, and really, don t even plan to travel. you don t need to be on the roads. yeah, okay. well, laura southard, thank you for that update from the virginia department of emergency management. thank you. and we re keeping a very close eye on the capitol hilton right now. that s because the president is there speaking to the democrats at the democratic national committee convention, a gathering there. it s an annual event. so, the president made his way to the capitol hilton just a few blocks away from the white house. probably climbed in an suv there to get to the capitol hilton, given that snow. let s listen to what the president is saying. ray buckley, our dnc vice chair from new hampshire, alex germond, secretary tobias, treasurer, thank you for the
mid-atlantic cities above a foot and a half, including pittsburgh, philadelphia, washington, d.c., almost at 20 now, and baltimore, last report we had was 22 inches. and it s still snowing hard. now, that is significant for baltimore. here s why. record-breaking. this is now the second snowiest winter ever recorded in baltimore. we ve had 57.6 inches of snow this winter. to break the all-time record, we only need four or five more inches. we may get that this afternoon. this so far is the fifth largest snowstorm in baltimore s history. we only need about six inches to break their all-time record, and we do have a chance at doing that. and the same goes for d.c. you see the snow is not over with. it s starting to taper off in pittsburgh and also much of west virginia, but the heavy snow continues. the bright white now extends from richmond northwards up into washington, d.c., baltimore, all of delaware, up into southern new jersey, including philadelphia. and philadelphia s been getting
again, about two feet of snow has come down. it s still snowing here. road crews have been out all night, trying to get a handle on this situation. of course, they will be out here much of the day trying to get rid of this snow here and make these roads safe for people to drive and get to work next week. so, that is the very latest here in westmoreland county, just outside of pittsburgh. i ll send it back to you guys. okay, rick earle, thank you for that report. you can see the mess that continues to churn in the mid-atlantic region. the state of pennsylvania, the governor now declared a state of emergency, hoping to get as much help as they can to deal with all the snow there in that state. we ll have bill karins live for you at the top of the hour with more updates. meantime, let s go to that shark attack on wednesday off the florida coast. marine wildlife experts have now ruled out that great whites were the type of shark that mauled a kite surfer to death off the beach of flori
