For any athlete targeting overseas competition, the Covid-19 pandemic has ensured these remain uncertain times. When you don t know exactly what the future holds, or which specific event you should be aiming for, all you have to fall back on is your own motivation and enjoyment of the sport.
That s where George Snook comes into his own.
The Okere Falls canoe slalom and whitewater paddler was recently named 2021 Whitewater Grom of the Year. Entrants send in a highlight reel from their 2020/21 seasons and about 500 of the top kayakers in the world vote for the winners.
In September, 1998, an erstwhile collection of self-proclaimed fishing enthusiasts congregated in the extreme northeast corner of Costa Rica, just south from the southeastern Nicaragua border.
These enthusiasts were Al Pozniak (bartender at Old Florida Restaurant in Fort Lauderdale), Joe Zeno (Fort Lauderdale mattress maker guaranteeing 8 hours of rest on 4 hours of sleep on his mattresses), Weymouth siblings T Clark, Michael and Jonathan (lawyer, builder and engineer) and yours truly (Road Scholar).
Also along was Max Gomez, a longtime pal of Jonathan’s and a sometime resident of Costa Rica who was the local organizer of this foray into tarpon land.

Tanesha Hudson says Chip Boylesâ new contract outwardly violates a state code. This statute requires anyone appointed to the city manager position to be under an indefinite term unless it is a temporary position for no more than a year.
Snook slated to reopen in Atlantic state waters Feb. 1
Snook is slated to reopen for recreational harvest on Feb. 1 in Florida’s Atlantic coastal and inland waters (from the Miami-Dade/Monroe county line north), including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River.
