~Alexandra Heilbron
The Mauritanian – Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Tahar Rahim, who received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance) has been held for years in prison at Guantanamo Bay Prison Camp by the U.S. Government without a single charge or the possibility of a trial, on suspicion that he was involved in the attacks that took place in America on 9/11. Defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Jodie Foster, who won a Golden Globe for her role) and her associate Teri Duncan (Shailene Woodley) decide to take on his case. They run into opposition from Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Couch (Benedict Cumberbatch), but as he uncovers evidence, he begins to believe there has been a conspiracy to detain innocent men. The future of Pueblo lies in the tiny-but-rapidly-growing hands of its children.
And although the vital importance of quality child care and early learning is well documented and widely accepted, many children particularly those in impoverished and middle-class families still fall through the cracks.
To shine a light on the importance of quality child care and local efforts to create safe and healthy environments for Pueblo kids, the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment hosted a screening Wednesday of the early care and education documentary “No Small Matter,” which was followed by a web-based panel discussion of local experts.

Early education is the focus of a film festival in Alabama this month.
The Invest Early Film Festival is featuring two documentaries about the importance of early education in the state. The project is being put on by the Alabama Association of School Boards, the Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama School Readiness Alliance. Allison Muhlendorf is the executive director of the Alliance. She said this is an opportunity to inform people about the needs of education before the next legislative session.
“We are encouraging state leaders to continue to expand Alabama’s Pre-K program by bumping up the level of funding each year. We’re also supporting investments in child care quality to help parents have more quality options and help strengthen the overall child care system,” she said.
