ceiling. a familiar topic, but the circumstances this time are quite different. on friday, janet yellin announced that the united states will hit its debt limit this coming thursday. the debt limit is the maximum amount, according to law, that the federal government can borrow to pay for its obligations, to pay for things start to spend money on. that includes, all of the really important functions of government, everything from air traffic control to medicare and social security payments, congress decides what that limit is. so, secretary yellen wrote to house speaker kevin mccarthy, warning him that it is, quote, critical that congress act in a timely manner, to increase or suspend the debt limit, and quote. she wanted to explain that, quote, filler to meet the governments obligations would cause irreparable harm to the u.s. economy, the livelihoods of all americans, and global financial stability. all of that is true. to be clear, the united states government to fight fal

we i think folks are fed up, republicans, independents and certainly democrats feel like they were lied to, because they were lied to. tell me about the roles this plays in the sort of dysfunctional republican conference. i was talking to don bacon on sunday, and he said to me, you, know the hard work is going to come. we thought the hard work is getting the speaker elected, but in fact, this business about the debt ceiling, this is really hard work. this is the stuff that you have to take seriously, as a member the united states congress. snow backstop here. if congress doesn t residents, feeling are in trouble here. lives are at stake here, seniors rely on regular social security payments, folks on medicare rely on that resource to get them through the day. folks who need to receive a
are part of the republican caucus that decides not to raise the debt ceiling, and i triggers inflation, further inflation, which triggers a recession, it s not good for them in 2024. i did not think it s good for them, but i don t think they completely understand this. they seem to have graduated from the george santos school of economics. this is going to hurt them, it s going to hurt the country more. and that s the real cynical aspect of this, for these republicans, they will keep their seats in congress. they are learning from seeds that couldn t lose to a democrat, very likely, under any scenario. they will keep their see, look at their job, they ll keep their paycheck. but they are willing to put the u.s. economy, and frankly the global economy under threat in order to essentially, make joe biden look bad. this really does seem, and this is overly cynical, seemed to be an effort to create chaos, as if it s all going to fall at
