In May 2020, Scott Heron told
Westword that he had put the Skylark Lounge, at 140 South Broadway, on the market for $2.5 million. He wasn t selling because of COVID-19; he was just ready to move on, do some sailing, travel and explore a new career in solar energy.
With the economy crashing at the start of the pandemic, he didn t think there was much of a chance the venue would sell for the next few years. Lucky for Heron who feared the building would be purchased by somebody looking to turn it into a hip, upscale spot or scrape it altogether for more apartments he was wrong.

Restaurants and bars play a huge role in Austin s community and camaraderie, and two new spots hope to reignite a small bit of Austin s sense of togetherness, one pod at a time.
In the Cherrywood neighborhood just off of Airport, Bobo s Snack Bar quietly opened last week. Married couple Bethany Andrée and Karl Gilkey owned South Congress Snack Bar, the restaurant at Austin Motel for seven years, until they lost their lease in 2016 when the property was sold. Their new snacky bar venture, Bobo s, has been three years, three months, and two weeks in the making, says Andrée.

Standing onstage with saxophonist Elias Haslanger s local quintet, Andre Hayward preps for his moment. As the two men finish a harmonized riff on the bandleader s Smiley s Stairs, Hayward lifts his bell to the microphone to take the first solo. The trombonist sticks close to the melody at first, adding slight variations, before scattering flurries of notes that belie their creator s relaxed state.
At the point it all threatens to veer too far outside, Hayward brings it back home, gracefully recasting the melody and setting up Haslanger s own break. Though there s no live audience, Hayward earns enthusiastic applause from his bandmates.
