In the past year alone, Liza Minnelli has outlived the Copacabana, Christopher Plummer, and Robert F. Kennedyâs Instagram account. She has outlived Larry King, Mary-Kate Olsenâs marriage, and the blockage of the Suez Canal. She has outlived Queen Elizabeth IIâs dachshund-corgi mix, Vulcan, and the Queenâs husband, Prince Philip. She has outlived the Pacific Theatres and ArcLight Cinemas, Century 21, the search for Lady Gagaâs kidnapped French bulldogs, and the Manhattan restaurateur Sirio Maccioni, at whose now-defunct French eatery Le Cirque she once performed an impromptu version of âNew York, New York,â during the birthday party of the gossip columnist Liz Smith. (Smith died in 2017, so Minnelli has outlived her, too.)

Sirio Maccioni, the ringmaster of Le Cirque who died last year at 88, used to half-joke that all he really did was stop people from stealing the famed restaurant’s schwag: marked ashtrays, coffee cups, and silverware. Anyone who has ever wanted a memento will have opportunities through May 12 as Black Rock Galleries hosts an online auction to sell many of the original contents from Le Cirque over the course of its multiple locations from 1974–2018.
The 314 lots range from plates and aprons to a silver-plated carving trolley. As with any auction, it’s always good to have a professional who can distinguish the best items from the pedestrian. As the co-author of Sirio’s autobiography, I’ve spent much of my life with all of these items and can happily direct you.

Take home a piece of New York history with some fancy Big Top flair.
Iconic society haunt Le Cirque, which originally opened in Manhattan in 1974, is auctioning off a treasure trove of collectibles acquired by its famous founder, Sirio Maccioni, through the decades.
Known for launching the careers of countless chefs, and serving the likes of Frank Sinatra, Julia Child, various presidents, and royalty, the legendary French restaurant officially closed its doors on New Year s Eve 2017. Though it still maintains active locations in Las Vegas, New Delhi, Mumbai, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi, a New York City comeback is currently in the works.
