Beach Eats: A look back at flavors past

Bob Yesbek April 23, 2021 I know it s a little blurry, but sometimes history can be that way. Local Realtor and auctioneer Butch Emmert s grandma opened the iconic Dinner Bell Inn in her living room at the corner of Christian Street and Philadelphia Avenue. It eventually grew into a 500-seat complex with gardens and live entertainment. Entree prices hovered around $2.95 to about $7.95. Talk about history! You never know when you’re going to hit a nerve. I’m still getting responses to last week’s article about the late Chef Leo Medisch and the Back Porch Café. It’s soothing to know that somebody’s on the other end of this keyboard wire.

Not-so-hidden gems in the fourth block

Not-so-hidden gems in the fourth block If Lupo Italian Kitchen s breakfasts are anything like their longtime favorite entrees (the lobster bucatini is pictured), then guests at Hotel Rehoboth are in for a morning treat. SUBMITTED PHOTO Bob Yesbek March 5, 2021 It all started when Keith Martin’s grandfather opened a taxi service on the first block of Rehoboth Avenue where Snyder’s Candy is now. As the go-to chauffer for visiting notables and glitterati from Washington, D.C. and New York City, he quickly discovered that he needed a spot where he could work on his vehicles. So he opened a little gas station at the corner of Rehoboth and Lake avenues. Back in the day, that was one of five gas stations that graced downtown Rehoboth Beach.

Wyoming Valley, Connecticut?

The Susquehanna River flows from Lake Otsego, New York, to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Near Sunbury, it is joined by the west branch; near Pittston, it is joined by the Lackawanna; north, it forms a triangle at Tioga and is joined by the Chemung. The earliest settlers in the region, known as Wyomink, had been living here for thousands of years, as evidenced by artifacts on display at the Luzerne County Historical Society. For unknown reasons, by 1575, this people disappeared from the area. It is unclear how or why. It wasn’t until about the 1650s that the area was populated again. A band of Native Americans from the northeast claimed sovereignty over the area. They were the Iroquois Confederacy, the name given to the confederation or league of five nations: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayga and Seneca. When English settlers began arriving around the 1660s, they decided they wanted this land.
