Access to scientifically robust data and analytics is currently patchy and unreliable. Armed with better information, underpinned by innovative UK science, financial institutions around the world will be much better placed to make decisions that contribute to a more sustainable planet. This will help financial institutions shift money away from risky activities that harm the environment, such as coal-fired power and deforestation, and towards activities that are less harmful, such as renewable power and sustainable agriculture.

Impacts of marine plastic pollution in south-east Asia researched 22 October 2020 Leading environmental and research agencies in the UK and in Singapore have announced funding support for four innovative international research collaborations. The project will investigate how to reduce the impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems in south-east Asia. The research collaborations represent a £6 million investment by: Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) UK government funding supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Professor Dame Georgina Mace, 1953-2020 22 September 2020 It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of Professor Dame Georgina Mace. Dame Georgina’s notable work on biodiversity loss and ecosystem change led to the well-known development of criteria for listing species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of threatened species and was a coordinating lead author for biodiversity in the widely regarded Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. Professor Sir Duncan Wingham, Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Executive Chair commented: Dame Georgina was a very much respected member of the NERC community and served as a NERC council member from 2011-2018. During her time on council I personally found her to be a truly supportive champion of NERC and a genuine friend to those who worked alongside her.
