PORTLAND, Ore. Canada captain Christine Sinclair added to her legend Saturday, helping the Portland Thorns win the NWSL Challenge Cup tournament in a penalty shootout over Gotham FC.
Sinclair opened the scoring in the eighth minute to became the National Women s Soccer League s active leader with 60 career goals. North Carolina s Lynn Williams has 59.
The Portland skipper picked up the ball after a heavy touch by Carli Lloyd and turned for goal. As defenders backpeddled, she curled a left-footed shot into the corner from just outside the penalty box.

Portland Thorns FC will host NJ/NY Gotham FC tomorrow for the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup Final. The Thorns have the opportunity to lift a trophy for the first time since winning the 2017 NWSL Championship.

Getting a result against the Houston Dash didn’t actually matter for the Portland Thorns, but with the NWSL regular season starting in two weeks, at least the Thorns found some things to work on.

In their final match of group play, Portland Thorns FC drew the Houston Dash 1-1 thanks to a late goal from Christine Sinclair. Shea Groom had the goal for Houston.
Portland Thorns FC entered their match against Houston knowing that they will host NJ/NY Gotham FC in the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup Final. The Thorns traveled to BBVA Stadium only to close out group play against the Dash.
Portland and Houston had their first chance within the first two minutes of kickoff. Christine Sinclair fired over the crossbar and Kristie Mewis’s cross tested Adrianna Franch. Both teams struggled to deal with pressure which led to transition opportunities for the Thorns and Dash.
