The Métis and Innu nations are showing solidarity with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President Natan Obed, after he released an open letter denouncing what he calls “illegitimate claims to Inuit rights” being advanced by a self-identified Indigenous group in southern and central Labrador.
The Canadian government was warned internally to hold off on signing an Indigenous reconciliation agreement with a self-proclaimed Inuit group in Labrador, but did so anyway despite doubts about whether the group holds Indigenous rights, documents reveal.
Although their day in court has been delayed, the Innu Nation says it'll be ready to call on the Canadian government to cancel a memorandum of understanding that recognizes members of NunatuKavut as Indigenous.
Arguments over Inuit identity have taken the forefront in Labrador, after the provincial government planned an apology to NunatuKavut members who attended residential schools.
