Besides no longer feeling comfortable burning candles in their home, Donald and Rita Perry installed fire-resistant plants around their new home off of Little Walnut Road. Donald Perry suggested watering them Saturday morning because they were turning brown. The Perrys lost nearly everything when their former home in Silver Acres burned in the Quail Ridge Fire 10 years ago.

Grant County commissioners on Thursday weighed in on a controversial piece of legislation making its way through the Roundhouse in Santa Fe: the N.M. Civil Rights Act.
Over the course of a three-hour meeting, commissioners approved several resolutions authorizing Colonias infrastructure grant applications for a preliminary engineering report for Silver Acres and two road projects, one in Arenas Valley and the other in North Hurley.
They also approved an agreement that ensures the county’s continued participation in the DWI prevention program, as well as a services agreement with the Center for Health Innovation, which operates a career training program intended to motivate primary health care providers to practice in rural Grant County.

Manny Orosco, Silver City Wastewater Treatment Plant supervisor, checks the inflow and outflow dials on the 1979-vintage machine that monitors the amount of sewage flowing into the facility as well as the amount of treated effluent that flows out. The top left dial tracks the influent, while the top right dial tracks the effluent that is pumped uphill to Scott Park Golf Links, where it is used to water the grass, and the bottom left dial tracks the effluent that is returned to the watershed.
