Commander of the Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) Lt. Gen. Martin Herem said on the "Esimene stuudio" talk show on Tuesday that looking at Russia's invasion of Ukraine, he no longer believes in deterrence as a way to ensure national security.
Of 8,800 reservists summoned to take part in the Estonian Defense Forces' Siil (Hedgehog) 2022 major training exercise 1,300 were exempt from the obligation to participate for various reasons, while 1,400 failed to show up without specifying why, the EDF told ERR.
Participants in the Estonian military exercise SIIL and Latvian exercise Namejs practiced cooperation under the leadership of NATO's Headquarters Multinational Division North. After the exercises, a joint line-up of Estonian and Latvian soldiers was held on the border of the two countries, in Valga (Estonia) and Valka (Latvia).
