at first reports they re hopeful the pilot may have run into a problem and put the helicopter down in a remote area that hopefully everyone is okay. and they will be rescued at first light. a nearby helicopter flying at the same time reported radio chatter that the american said they d run into fuel problems. this are other reports of spotting the american helicopter in this over our region. an initial air search an hour before darkness fell did not turn up anything. should have been easier to find them. one of the problems is the rough terrain in nepal with these steep high altitude mountains. if the helicopter s on the ground surrounded by mountains, their communications gear may not be working properly. they may not be allowed to get a signal out. that may be what is going. on that is what the pentagon hopes. they ll put helicopters and aircraft back in the air and try
problem. it certainly is. david, co-pilots said they prevented from alarms going off. why would he do nah? . he was trying to prevent an emergency signal or warning, because it goes back to the carrier which if you see the speed of the aircraft the velocity not exceed the aircraft it will send a signal out and warn them that there s something going on on the aircraft. it apparently to me it appears as though he was trying to make this look like it was just a normal descent or some kind of thing he was fighting in the aircraft. he didn t want people to know he had committed suicide is what i derived from that, he had done that. good point. david soucie justin greene gary cay. thank you. ahead, the brazen terror attack of the university in kenia. we learn disturbing new details about how the massacre played out, plus mass terror plot in the united states. two women arrested in new york
for us. thank you zblmp. let s bring in our panel of experts. rene marsh, pamela brown. aviation analyst peter goelz. law enforcement analyst, tom fuentes. geoffrey thomas of airlinera airlineraitings with us from perth, australia. first of all, they apparently detected the cell phone was the co-pilot was on trying to get some sort of connection with a cell tower. what do you make of that? i think it s pretty important because it shows there was something going on in the cockpit some time after the plane made the turn. and that it was low enough for a cell tower to pick up. so i think it s pretty significant. and it s something they ve got to dig into and explain. does it give the investigators, thomas, specific clue, and i think peter makes a good point for a cell tower to pick it up in penang and malaysia, maybe it was flying at 4,000, 5,000 feet? because the plane s got to be relatively low in order to get that kind of signal out.
so it s day 36 of this search. these batteries on the pingers are required to last 30 days. do you think the batteries have maxed out now? could there possibly be another 24 to 48 hours of battery life left? in our testing, we ve been able to get anywhere from 35 to 40 days. we were told that the pingers were due to have their batteries replaced last year, which would indicate they re five years old and nearing the end of their life. so we re confident that there may be a couple more days left, but as the battery starts to degrade, the signal is going to get weaker, so it s going to be even more difficult to hear it until it eventually can t produce enough power to send a signal out. so there could be a few more days left. there s been a lot of talk, chris, that pingers should have a longer life. how hard is it to create technology to make that happen?
