Summit explores legislative solutions to unsustainable, extraction-based economies By Rebecca O Neil | Staff Writer Environmental leaders this week discussed ways to shift the Sierra Foothills’ economy toward restoration as opposed to extraction during a summit hosted by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. Experts in forest restoration and community development discussed the details of drafting and passing legislation necessary to encourage private corporations toward sustainable stewardship. Elliot Vander Kolk, a regional forester at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, said Monday’s summit is part of a larger, ongoing conversation about the fallout of the 2020 wildfire season and the future of forest management. Vander Kolk said there is a $1 billion proposal focused specifically on coordinated forest health and fire prevention in Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2021-22 budget, which totals $227.2 billion.

A collaborative effort of local business, tourism and economic development organizations has announced the creation of an innovative wine competition and festival celebrating the wines - the Folsom Wine Festival. This long-awaited effort is designed to share those locally-created wines with wine lovers that may not already be aware of the region s wines. The competition, to be held in Folsom on May 15, will bring celebrated wine experts together to judge entries from Sierra Foothill Wineries. Following the judging, the Foothill Wine Festival will take place in Folsom on Saturday, November 20, providing a hyper-local wine experience and introducing consumers to the variety and quality of wines being created from grapes grown in their local foothill region.
