DURBAN - FED-UP Msunduzi Municipality ratepayer organisations are threatening legal action against the municipality, a move that could see some municipal services being taken over by residents.
The Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civics (Marrc), an umbrella body of various ratepayer organisations, said it was forming a committee that would enlist the service of top legal minds to decide on a course of action. It said ratepayers under the municipality were becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the level of service delivery and had even threatened to withhold their rates.

DURBAN - FORMER Msunduzi Municipality municipal manager Sizwe Hadebe could face civil claims to the tune of thousands of rand for losses suffered by the municipality through alleged corrupt or illegal dealings that took place under his tenure.
On Thursday, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) tabled a report at a full council meeting that looked into allegations of malfeasance in the municipality dating back to Hadebe tenure.
In a statement, Cogta said it had sent senior officials to the Msunduzi and Richmond councils to report on forensic investigations into allegations of fraud, corruption, maladministration and statutory non-compliance at these municipalities. It gave these councils 21 days to report back.

DURBAN - THE Msunduzi Municipality’s over-reliance on consultants to do the work of council employees saw the embattled municipality pay out R207 million last year.
Between July 2019 and October 2020, the municipality paid R207m for consultants, and this figure was R183m in September the previous year.
This was highlighted by municipal administrator Scelo Duma, who warned against the over-reliance on consultants and called on the municipality to improve internal capacity.
The issue of consultants has raised the alarm of opposition parties, who say the municipality can ill-afford spending so much money on consultants when it has staff employed to do the same work.
