There’s a boring binary in our everyday politics. Instead of nuancing this, our current discourse on social media, where millions talk politics every minute of every day, has worsened it. We are still stuck, like Smiley’s people, in the Cold War era. Left versus Right. Communism versus laissez faire. Marx versus Ayn Rand. State capitalism versus private enterprise. Business versus trade unions. The US versus Russia (after Trump’s exit, that binary is back again.) We also have India versus Pakistan. Local business versus MNCs. And yes, those traditional binaries that end up mocking all policy - like rich versus poor, suit-boots versus farmers.
