Azumi Setoda offers a refreshing take on the Japanese ryokan experience on the island of Ikuchijima

Hotelier Adrian Zecha has inaugurated the first entry in the Azumi brand. Located on the small Japanese island of Ikuchijima, Azumi Setoda occupies a 140-year-old compound transformed by Kyoto-based architect Shiro Miura to embody a contemporary ryokan experience.
Characterized by a mix of open and intimate spaces, the design is outlined by a traditional cedar kakine (or fence) designed by landscape architecture firm WA-SO to establish a harmonious balance between the neutral interiors and the soothing onsite gardens. Custom wood furniture made by a local artisan complement a palette of local materials that’s predominantly dominated by unfinished Japanese cypress. Located in Japan s Setouchi region, Azumi Setoda is the first property of Azumi, a hospitality brand created by Adrian Zecha, founder of Aman, and Naru Developments. “Most members of Naru Developments worked together with Adrian at Aman,” shares Yuta Oka, co-founder of Azumi. “Adrian had always spoken about ryokans as it was something that he had experienced and loved back in the 1950s.”

Azumi Setoda is the first hotel of a new brand inspired by traditional Japanese inns known as
ryokan, says Claire Wrathall in the Financial Times. It is set to open in March on the island of Ikuchijima in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, in a splendid 19th-century building that was once the home of a powerful shipping family. “The building has been restored and converted to accommodate 18 suites and four duplexes, each with its own garden or balcony, by Kyoto-based Shiro Miura, an expert in
