She was born not three miles east of here in the town of madison and she spent a lot of time in this area as well as bucktown a few miles west of here. It was here in this area of Dorchester County that she learned the skills vital to make her a successful conductor on the underground railroad, reading the landscape, reading the stars, foraging for food and being comfortable outdoors by herself. Id like to highlight a little bit about our Visitors Center. This building is lined in cedar. These last three buildings are lined in zinc and the idea behind the zinc is that over time it will begin to patina and weather kind of like copper begins to patina and it will begin to fade and the idea is that after you come through our Visitors Center your ignorance about Harriet Tubmans life with the under
