Sheriff Brian Schenck says a 31-year-old Springport man faces a number of charges after a rape investigation in the town of Brutus. The investigation began with the report that a 31-year-old male, identified as Justin Mariani, engaged in non-consensual sex with a 17-year-old female victim from Auburn. Through the course of the investigation, another victim and incident was identified. The second victim was a 22-year-old Auburn woman, who was attacked by Mariani in April.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and Auburn Police Department executed a joint- underage alcohol sales compliance detail this week, resulting in a number of local violations. The detail took place on Friday, April 18 according to Sheriff Brian Schenck who announced the results in a press release. Altogether 54 businesses were checked for compliance using volunteers under the age of 21. The volunteers attempted to purchase alcohol.

The Crime Victim Specialist Program has  been created in partnership with Cayuga Counseling Services utilizing grant funding from  the U.S. Department for Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime.   Victim Advocate Jessica Wagner is employed by Cayuga Counseling Services and  has been assigned directly to the Sheriff’s Office under this new partnership. She brings  fours years of experience serving victims and will now be available to immediately partner  with members of the Sheriff’s Office to support those that have been victimized as a result  of criminal activity. Cayuga County law enforcement leaders object to marijuana legalization

The leaders of two major Cayuga County law enforcement agencies do not support the legalization of marijuana in New York state. Auburn Police Chief Shawn Butler and Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck are voicing concerns about the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed it into law Wednesday. Under the law, New Yorkers 21 and older can now possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana and use it in private or in public. Convictions for marijuana crimes that no longer exist will be expunged, and people with such convictions will be among those given priority for licenses to grow and sell the drug, which will be permitted beginning April 1, 2022. New York is the 16th state to legalize the drug.
