welcome back to dateline extra. i m craig melvin. who killed shelly nance? police were focusing on two potential suspects. shelly s roommate and her boyfriend. both denied any involvement in her murder. but according to his roommate nathan was obsess would her. and police had found the bloody baggy in his bathroom. soon even more details of troubling behavior would emerge, but this time not about nathan. here again keith morris. reporter: they took shelley nance s body back to italy, texas, not quite a week after the murder. held her funeral at the family s church. and it seemed like the whole town was there, along with many of shelley s fellow students from the art institute of dallas. it s the most horrible thing we ve ever been through. the day after the funeral, i was ready to kill somebody. reporter: the institute held a memorial, too.
and draw everything. anything. everything. she loved to draw. and draw and draw. shelly was different. from the other girls at school and home. said her dad. the other two girls we couldn t keep in the house. she didn t want to go out of the house. she was perfectly happy to be at home on the weekend. staying alone time. by herself. which as you can imagine didn t make her very popular in the intensely social world of growing up. it didn t seem to matter much to shelly. they had them write an epilogue for the seniors. and she wrote you laugh at me because i m different. i laugh at you because you re all the same. she wasn t like you two? no. opposite. these are her sisters. she got in trouble. shelly however did not raise
shelly nance who always steered clear of trouble, was stabbed to death in her own bedroom. detectives believe the killer was somebody she knew. possibly her roommate. after all, it was ashly who found her. now, they were about to bring the young woman in for questioning. and would confront her with a potentially important piece of evidence. i kept thinking i was asleep, it was a really bad dream. and this wasn t really happening. i couldn t imagine anything like that ever happening. definitely a shock. reporter: the first stage was denial. that shelley nance, their innocent wisp of a sister, had been murdered, was almost beyond comprehending. but maybe worse, quite possibly they weren t going to know who did it. the first and most obvious mystery jumped right out at the experienced eyes that cased her bloody bedroom. shelley had been dead a while. we could tell by lookin at
police zero in on three fellow students. the dead girls friend. a small group of shelley s fellow students. had a budding artist designed a seemingly perfect murder? there was the boyfriend, fascinated with weapons. he had daggers. knives. swords. who collects that kind of stuff? reporter: there was the guy always hoping to get her attention. trying to corner her in the hallways at school. texting her on the phone. she s like, he s really weirding me out. reporter: but maybe the brutality of the crime pointed to the roommate. something like a lover would do. a spurned lover. absolutely. shelly nance was a shy girl. a budding artist who greatest pleasure was to sit in her room and draw. with thattal entd. she earned a scholarship to the art institute of dallas. she was thriving. then, the unthinkable happened. shelly was stabbed to death.
