we have some fact checking on this tonight. critics may compare this to watching his slow-moving train wreck he was given high marks for standing there and taking some heat but almost as noticeable as his claims today were the topics that he failed to approach at all. he didn t lay out his vision fo reducing the rampant violence sweeping across the country nor stopping the flow of migrants flowing into the country. instead plenty of back-and-fort in a in a rear press conference concerns over russian aggressio in ukraine and why is peter put this why are you trying so hard in your first year to pull the country so far back? i don t know what you would consider to be too far to the left?
campaign. that s jamming. so they didn t stop ukrainian military and the civilian population from being able to communicate with one another. and we re seeing some of that play out in how the ukrainian military has been able to respond here. there was a belief that the russian military would completely cripple their ability, to communicate with one another. the fact that they didn t do that is one of the reasons we re seeing the russian military already take casualties, some of the pictures that we re seeing of the russian military, the ukrainian military being able to respond. i think that s a direct correlation to the fact they didn t take those measures. and you could make the argument that the reason vladimir putin decided not to do that is because he lacked the element of surprise throughout this entire last several weeks. he didn t lay out, didn t provide this element of expectation with large-scale cyberattacks and jamming. he just started with the air strikes. but we re seeing
government continue to carry out such attacks the u.s. could have a similar response. we ve heard from the treasury secretary that there will be some economic consequences for syria as well. what are we hearing about those? reporter: that s right. in the same briefing with reporters yesterday treasury secretary said the u.s. government would be announcing additional sanctions against syria. he didn t lay out who would be affected. they are targeting people who do business with syria. steve mnuchin said we view sanctions as being a very important tool and use them to maximum effect. the key question here is to what effect? what effect could any additional sanctions have on the ability of syrian president bashar al assad to wage this war against his own people. will it affect his actions. so far sanctions don t seem to have much of an effect. athena jones there for us on the island of palm beach.
that s the clip out of tonight. it s totally unimportant to democrats in the room. i was shocked that there was an audience, given how silent they were on the isis issue. what made you think that she made herself more hawkish tonight than obama? she said this was not an american fight. she did say it was an american fight. she said it s not an american-led fight. she said americans have to be in this fight, david, but then to say we have to defeat isis sure, but that s not to speak [ overlapping speakers ] is that boots on the ground? she didn t lay out details. she is very cautious and vague. do you think it would have helped her tonight to lay that kind of thing out? no. but that s the answer we need. this is the most important debate we re having, what would she do today if she were present different than what barack obama
